WELCOME FROM THE PRESIDENT

It is our great pleasure to welcome you to the 5th International Symposium on the System of Radiological Protection, a biennial international symposium, jointly organised by the Australasian Radiation Protection Society (ARPS) and the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) this year in Adelaide, Australia.

ICRP makes world standards for radiation exposure within a framework of permitting essential radiation practices from which we all benefit, such a mining, medicine, industry, and innovation.

Radiation protection standards and philosophy directly affect both government and industrial activities all over Australia. Life-saving medical applications including the use of linear accelerators is possible only with the continued observation of continually improving safety requirements developed by the ICRP. The mining of uranium and mineral sands is only possible within the legislative frameworks established via adoption of ICRP radiation protection philosophy. Future management and disposal of radioactive wastes will apply the recommendations of the ICRP. Any missions to space will also need to consider the radiation effects on people and goods and the ICRP is actively involved in this area.

With a Symposium theme of “Mines, Medicine, Mars”, we believe ICRP 2019 offers the best platform for the exchange of ideas and information between professionals, experts and researchers.

We very much look forward to welcoming you to Adelaide.

Brad Cassells
President
